IOS 10 has a keyboard that floats on iPad . For now, Apple has decided not to activate it, but developer Steven Troughton-Smith has unearthed it and even managed to activate it. Anyone can actually do it (except those who have an iPad Pro 12.9 inches).

To test, make sure to have an iPad under the latest iOS update (iOS 10.2 or iOS 10.3 beta). Here are the steps:

    • Go to this page from your iPad and copy all the displayed code
    • Download Apple's Swift Playgrounds App ( Link App Store - Free)
    • Open Swift Playgrounds, go to the My Playgrounds tab, click on the "+" sign at the top left and paste the previously copied code
    • Click "Run My Code" to activate the keyboard
    • Hold the globe button on the keyboard and check "Floating"
It is done, the floating keyboard will appear on the screen. It looks like the one on the iPhone in view of its compact shape. It is only possible to use it within the Swift Playgrounds application at the moment and not in the other applications present on the iPad.

See now if Apple will decide whether to enable this default keyboard with a future iOS update. The user would not need to fiddle and could thus enjoy it everywhere.
