How to backup your iPhone or iPad using iCloud and iTunes

Backups are highly recommended before updating, upgrading your device or jailbreaking. Your iPhone or iPad hold valuable and private information like all your photos, messages, health data, documents, accessory setups, settings, and more. It’s very frustrating when you lose all your files and settings and most of the times it can’t be recovered without a proper backup.

Apple has made the backup process very simple, in order to safely back up your iPhone or iPad, follow the steps below.

What is a backup and what options you have?

A backup of your iPhone or iPad includes all your device settings: App data, Home screen, and app organization, iMessages and texts (SMS, MMS), ringtones, your visual voicemail passcode, health data, and HomeKit configurations. You have two options; iCloud backup or iTunes backup.

How to backup your iPhone or iPad using iCloud?

*Photos and videos are only backed up if you don’t already have iCloud Photo Library enabled on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

You can do an iCloud backup by syncing your iPhone or iPad to iCloud. (If you back up your iPhone or iPad using iCloud, you’ll be able to access and them anywhere using Wi-Fi).

But before you can start backing up using iCloud, you first have to make sure that iCloud backups are enabled on your device.

  • How to enable iCloud backup?

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your Apple ID at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Tap iCloud Backup.
  5. Flip the switch next to iCloud Backup on.
  6. Tap OK.

iCloud will try and update your iPhone or iPad every 24 hours but your device needs to be connected to the Wi-Fi for the backup to be successful. If you would like to trigger the iCloud backup manually follow the steps below.

  • How to trigger an iCloud backup manually?

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your Apple ID at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Tap iCloud Backup.
  5. Tap Back Up Now.

*You need to have an Apple ID and you must have an iCloud account and be signed in to it. To create an Apple ID proceed to the Apple website to register one.

 

 

How to backup your iPhone or iPad using iTunes?

If you prefer to keep your data on your own computer you can perform a backup using iTunes.

  • How to enable iTunes backups?

  1. Connect your device to your computer. (using the lightning cable)
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Click on the Device icon next to the category drop-down menu on the left side of the iTunes window.
  4. Select Summary from the sidebar.
  5. Select This computer under Automatically Back up.
  6. Tick the box for Encrypt [device] backup to ensure that your passwords, health, and HomeKit data is backed up. You’ll have to create a password to protect your encrypted backups. The password will be automatically stored in Keychain.
  7. Click Done when you are finished.

  • How to backup manually using iTunes?

  1. Connect your device to your computer. (using your lightning cable)
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Click on the Device icon next to the category drop-down menu on the left side of the iTunes window.
  4. Select Summary from the sidebar.
  5. Select Back Up Now under Manually Back Up and Restore.
  6. Click Done when you are finished.
