How to set up Family Sharing on Apple Devices

Family sharing makes you share your iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases with other members of your family. You can use the same credit card for family purchases and parents can approve kids’ spending right from their device. It’s a very easy and effective way to share your photos, apps and documents amongst your family members.

To get started with this, first, you need to create an Apple ID account and determine which account will be the head of the family group. In other words, you need to decide who will connect their credit card and who will approve payments within the group for a different kind of content. To set up family share, each user in the group needs to have iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 8 or later or Mac with OS X Yosemite or later.

After you agree on which account will be the family organizer and which credit card you will use, it’s time for setting up Family Share. First, you need to go to Settings> (Your name) or Settings>iCloud if you are running a device with iOS 10.2 or earlier. Now tap on Set Up Family Sharing and then tap Get Started. After that, follow the on-screen instructions. If you are family organizer using Mac, you need to go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click iCloud and follow the on-screen instructions.

Now it’s time for inviting your family members to your group.

If your kid doesn’t have an Apple ID, you can create one for them. To do this go to Settings > iCloud > Family and follow instructions to create Apple ID for your child. Now when everyone has an Apple ID you can start inviting. To do this go to Settings > (Your name) > Family Sharing > Add Family Member. If you’re using iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings > iCloud > Family > Add Family Member. For inviting on your Mac, you need to go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click iCloud and choose Manage Family. Now you just need to click + to add your family members.

  • To accept your invitation on your iOS device, you need to go to Settings > (Your name) > Invitations. If you’re using iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings > iCloud > Invitations.
  • On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Manage Family to accept your invitation.

To accept you will need to confirm your Apple ID and password and you need to choose if you would like to share your location and content.

And that is it. You are now ready to use Family Sharing with your family members. To check our other instructional articles check Tips & Tricks.
