Flower is a permanent installation at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. That tells you everything you need to know about this beautiful, multi-award winning release from Thatgamecompany.
Already a much-admired game on PlayStation, it arrives on the iOS App Store with a number of improvements – more responsive motion controls, haptic feedback and slicker presentation. This is an interactive escape that takes you on an emotional journey like no other game you’ve ever experienced.
Flower lets you take control of the wind as you explore and navigate beautiful, lush environments using motion controls. Journey through varied landscapes at your own pace, interacting with and changing the environment as you go, and find balance and harmony in your surroundings.
You control the wind with an intuitive mix of tilt and touch, gathering up a growing flock of petals as you swoop through hills of swaying grass. And, well, that’s it. There’s no game over screen or way to fail – it’s just a pleasure to glide about the place.
Thatgamecompany’s director Jenova Chen clearly has a design philosophy quite different to most mainstream game creators. Flower, like his studios’ other multi-award winning creation Journey and the forthcoming Sky, it’s about much more than dudes shooting other dudes in a post-apocalyptic world – but if that’s what you’re into check out our best zombie games for iPhone and iPad list.
When Chen moved from China to California, he was taken by the US state’s vast stretches of vibrant green. “I felt like a man growing up in the desert, who traveled to the sea for the first time.” – he says. He wanted to share the experience, somehow and began work on what became Flower.
“Proof that games are art” – says a user in a review on the App Store giving Flower a 5 stars review – “This was the first game I played where what I was feeling was more important than what I was accomplishing.”
It’s literally a work of art. Flower is designed to be a game anyone can appreciate and we can’t ignore its beauty and unique design.
