I found this answer to a question a couple of minutes ago:

It used to be that "your" meant that something belongs to you and "you're" meant that "you are".

I noticed that in general there seems to be no distinction between "your" and "you're" on forums and discussion boards. The same goes for "their", "there" and "they're". The most commonly used forms are "your" and "there".
Has there been a change in spelling rules whereas these words are spelled the same becaus they sound (almost) the same?

We've had these kinds of adjustments in Germany so I was wondering if the English language has been simplified (in this specific way), too.

    Regards,
    Yonga

    Yes.

Your means you own something and you're means "you are"
However, on internet forums people dont ussually want to put in the apostraphe because they are typing fast. So they just put in "your" for both meanings

    Same with their and they're.

    Hey,

They all mean VERY different things in English - people who don't use them correctly are just being laaazy, and will find their posts being corrected

I even encountered this "phenomenon" in the "Master iTouch Mod/App list" (forgot the real name) here on the site. I guess that's because the guy who maintains the list just copies and pastes the original posts.

If that bothered you, you're definitely like me; a member of the online grammar/spelling police. I know you'll love this website: D-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.

Damn, that address was difficult to type on the touch.
