You know you could just cancel the contract...

    If you just want the phone and no service from AT&T you can activate the phone go home cancel the contract and pay 200 dollars in fees. Making the phone actually worth 400 dollars, if you get the basic model. So you can still get the phone and possibly unlock it.

    I don't know if the "birthday" method will work.

    or you can not pay at all and at t will cancel it right after your next bill for you

    Yeah, so the $199 thing that's printed in big bold letters on this site's front news page is pretty misleading. You have to sign the contract in-store (at least according to engadget), so if you cancel you have to pay a $175 early termination fee if you want to keep the phone+pay for the first month of service. That makes the total cost of an 8GB like $425 and the total for a 16GB around 525.

    That's great and all but I don't think it will be settled by July 11th. Anyways, I called and asked about purchasing as a gift and they said that the person I'm buying the gift for has to buy the plan within 30 days of me retrieving it. No contract needed.
