You can now literally use this as a cheap 3G/4G iPhone out of the box...

All you have to do is have a wireless hotspot device like a Clearwire iSpot. Connect to it through Wi-Fi and place videocalls or Skype/Fring (dirt cheap minutes) calls over 3G/4G, since it now has a built-in microphone. No contracts and it can cost as low as $30 per month. The only drawback is the hotspot devices only last 4 hours, so you only get 4 hours of calling and 3G/4G browsing per charge.

This is probably obvious but a new revelation.

Safari on iPad would not work with Google Voice.

Nope. It won't work. We need a Google Voice app or a workaround through a jailbreak.

Google Voice requires Flash. So no, it's not gonna work any time soon. Unless you manage to get Frash loaded on the device.

Its better to tether your iPod touch to an actual mobile device using iBluever/iTether. It uses bluetooth instead of WiFi, which is a huge battery killer. With Bluetooth, it has literally almost no impact on the battery, so you can go through a day or two without charging. The same goes for the phone thats being used as the hotspot.

Um in case nobody noticed, Whistle phone and iCall both allow you to call other people for free, and Whistlephone allows you to receive calls free too now thanks to a recent "push notification" upgrade.

I'll definitely upgrade just to get the built-in mic for VoIP.

Will the new FFC work with some of these other services?

Remember, the mic is next to the cam on the back. You're going to have to hold the iPod upside down and backwards to make calls.
