xubuntu is a striped version of ubuntu (i really nice os alternative and its 100% free)that way we could have a computer literally in our hands.
    requirements
When installed to the hard disk, Xubuntu requires at least 1.5 gigabytes of hard-disk space. Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but performs much better with at least 128 MB RAM.

this would be real nice cause if you install wine (windows emulator) you can play lots of games.
BUT DONT MAKE THIS THE OS
make it a app that way if you want the ipod os you can use that.

Porting something like that is very unlikely because xubuntu was designed for desktops. Desktop computers use x86 processors. Pocket PCs, the iPhone/touch, and some routers use ARM processors. Basically they are processors which were designed to be power saving and good at doing one thing rather than a desktop processor which is power hungry and good at doing a lot of stuff. Thats almost like saying my video card runs at 500mhz, can I run XP on it? They use different languages and are good at doing different things.

A more likely candidate would be the ones currently out for the pocket PC or the Sharp Zarus they run a special version of linux designed for their processor. They are nothing like the desktop version but I am pretty sure it just makes it a little easier to port software for linux desktop>portable and I think when the SDK comes out, people will start porting linux software to the touch because apple uses a version of linux for their OS.

i was going to say exactly what wardak stated but he beat me to it.

its also nice to know that other people on these boards know why it is difficult/impossible to run an x86-based OS.

i feel like i should post this:

THE IPOD TOUCH CANNOT RUN EVERYTHING. BE REALISTIC AND DO RESEARCH ON HARDWARE!
