    In semi-tethered, you can boot into normal mode, if you have to reboot, so you still have a non-jailbroken functional iPod. It is very buggy, or it would be the best way to do it. Winterboard has issues, Cydia has issues, BossPrefs has issues, so it is a neat idea, but far from ideal. But some people want to deal with that for the ability to have a functional iPod if you have to reboot or it crashes.

    Windows Y2K has potential to work. I wonder if anybody has tried to jailbreak on a Y2K machine.... But yes, this is very cross platform. I'm unsure of what it is built in, though.
