    Hey all.

Let me introduce my self. I am the developer of WLMI, an application that allows users to install a certain Windows program on their Mac... Many of my users would like to install the Windows Mobile version of this program on their iPhone or iPod Touch.

So, one day, I set off with a mission: to bring Wine to the iPhone OS.

I set on building Wine on my iPod Touch.

After a few chokes about gcc compilers, which were quickly resolved, Wine-1.1.27.deb was happily building on the iTouch. A slight choke about FreeType Fonts, and a few other shinanagans, but nothing fatal.

The absolute killer came when make complained, rightfully so, about there being no X cursor support, no X... And so on.

The shocking and unbelievable truth had hit me: no one has yet created an X server for the iPhone OS. Why?

A device that has the power to run Windows XP in Bochs does not have the necessary programs to allow it to run Wine in X11 ?

The mere thought is absurd, yet here we are.

Am I alone in thinking that this would be useful ?

No one has gotten Win XP to run.

Edit: And IMO I don't see the need of having Win mobile apps run when there are equivalent/better Apps in the App Store.

Would it be a cool project? Yeah, probably. Would it be very useful? I don't think so.

MobileWine could be useful for applications that have not yet been ported to the iPhone OS, just like Wine is useful for applications that are Windows-only.

I would love to see XP running quickly, which I highly doubt will happen.

We're going off topic ! Windows XP will run one day on the iPhone, i'm sure...

But the question remains: Why has no one ported Xquartz to the iDevice ? The task should not be that hard !

No one probably had a use for it. Why don't you port it?

I would love to port it myself, but my expertise is limited to XHTML, CSS, AppleScript Studio, Xcode, and Interface Builder. I have no idea how to go about porting Xquartz to iphoneos-arm...
