I'm syncing my music to my ipod, and I notice something - the amount for other on my ipod keeps changing. first it was 308.7, then it went up to 309.0, then back down to 308.7, then down to 308.5, then up to 310.0

    wtf?

In iTunes, the 'Other' section is for applications, the modified version of the operating system that the iPod touch uses and other things for the system. The reason why it is doing this is possibly because of album art or other small files associated with the mp3 file?

If you mean when you are adding songs to your ipod then this is because is has the songs on the ipod but they are not yet in the mobile music player app. once it is done syncing the songs and editing the itunes.db then the amount in other will go back to whatever it was.
