This is a discussion thread for the "WSJ: Apple in Talks with Cable Providers to Provide a "Set-Top Box"" story posted on the front page.
These rumours seem very close to the music in the cloud rumours we saw last year but the only problem is that most of the world isn't the USA and it will only be available for them at the moment if it is actually true.
I honestly don't know how the television industry is abroad. I'm assuming that it isn't as locked down, but I'm sure that its subject to the same terrible interfaces and crappy support that the US is. Is there an equivalent of the Cable Card available over there? How does it work? Because I'm sure that Apple wouldn't release this product as in the US only. They'd have to make similar agreements everywhere they want to launch.
Television in australia is outdated. Say a new show comes out in the states, we have to wait until that entire season has finished airing before we get to hear about it. if you want to pay for television, its overpriced and generally isn't worth it. Off topic, if the studios like fox dont want their shows illegally downloaded, they might like to look at airing them outside the states once in a while.
This is the exact reason I've considered a google tv set up versus the apple tv. I want a setup that has a guide and an easy to use apple oriented interface. Hopefully this will provide what I was looking for.
