you could use your iPod during takeoff and landing? The airlines could still maintain safety by implementing a Bluetooth-based system that will interrupt what you're doing on your iPod whenever the captain makes an announcement. They could also make it so the captain can shut off all iPhones and iTouches in an emergency.

Here's how it would work: you turn on your iTouch, turn Bluetooth on, connect it to the system, then the iTouch sees it's connected to a safety system and will listen for a PA or shutdown command.

I realize it would involve a firmware update from Apple & that it would cost the airlines.
Still, it would be nice to have.

You would use it in conjunction with Airplane Mode.

Doesn't the FCC mandate that devices don't emit any sort of harmful interference? As long as Wifi and Bluetooth are turned off, iPod touches should be perfectly safe for use on airplanes, even during takeoff and landing.

This is just a weird and drawn out way to turn on airplane mode. I certainly wouldn't want the captain to remotely shut off my iPod Touch whenever he wanted.
Most people wouldnt want this, and since the airlines couldn't really force you to connect to the Bluetooth, the number of users would be very few, therefore, a waste of money also.
