    I have a 1g Touch with iTunes 8.2

I can't get the iPod to stay in DFU mode. It seems to stay in DFU mode for a second. Itunes says "Waiting for iPod..." then there is a series of USB disconnect/reconnect sounds, the ipod screen flashes white, then it goes into recovery mode. It does that on two different computers, Windows 7 & XP.

Just go in iTunes pay for the firmware once it downloads click restore and you will be good. Shouldn't need to put in recovery or DFU.

iTunes will not say its in DFU - it will say its in recovery mode.

if you open the Hardware manager on your PC, and look in the USB section - it should show DFU mode.... but again. iTunes will NOT say its in DFU.

Yea, but he knows that it is not in DFU mode, because the recovery screen comes up.

I had this same exact problem, it was on Windows 7. I never fixed it. After I went back to Windows XP, it was fixed. By any chance are you using XP inside of Windows 7?
