I have a Week 38 ipod touch and it does not make blacks deep. They are always gray. Does this mean the screen is one of the bad ones or is this normal?
Noticed this doesn't happen with low brightness.

Check that your firmware is version 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, if it is then I'd take it back to the store for an exchange.

    Mine is firmware 1.1.1.
I bought it early October, no AppleCare. Will they still take it?

You have 90 day warranty on it. AppleCare extends beyond that and in theory makes it easier to get servicing. If you bought it from an authorized apple dealer they shouldn't give you grief. If you bought it from something like Best Buy or Futureshop, you can take it to an Authorize Apple Service shop and they can help you out.

Just watch out, if you mail in your unit to get a repair, they usually send you a refurb unit back under Apple's warranty.

Actually the Touch has a 1 year warranty according to the Apple web site. That's 1 year against defects, not dropping, scratching the back, using it as a hockey puck etc...

Turn down your brightness to half. Full brightness is too bright, blacks appear to be too bright.

Oh, that completely solved my problem, thanks. Anyways, I read about it, but I never thought it applied to my iPod until I compared the home screen on this picture to my iPod.

When I turn the brightness all the way up the blacks almost seem gray. Try turning it down.
