Well, my iPad doesn't charge when i hook it up to the laptop. It does however when i use the 10W charging kit that came with it. I read somewhere that Macs charge the iPad and some windows systems do also. I was wondering why mine didnt? My laptop is a bit on the old side if that helps, around 2006.

    Thanks

Requires a new(ish) high power USB port, which your laptop does not have.
Just charge it through the mains.

Actually, when your iPad is in sleep, it can charge, just very slowly.

Yes. On my MacBook pro ( not unibody) it says not charging on the iPad but it is actually charging. Just slowly. This will be probably fixed in the next firmware.

The OS doesn't matter when charging. Your USB ports don't give out enough juice for the iPad to register it is charging. As for the claims that it is charging slowly, I have no idea if those are true or not.

Hey, I saw this video (link), and the guy mentions (around 4:00) that the iPad takes twice as long to charge through USB, so I guess you should try charging through the wall charger.

In general, it's far better to use the wall adapter, as it provides the power necessary to charge the device quickly.

While USB ports will work if the iPad is off or in sleep mode, they basically just trickle charge the device. USB 2.0 ports will charge reasonably, even with the device on, but it is still far slower than the included 10w adapter.

Also, it's worth noting that the 10w adapter works for iPod Touches and iPhones. It charges them faster than a USB port as well. My 3G Touch charged from 0% to full charge in under an hour.
