ignore that and open up itunes

    btw
you mean an ipod touch right?
if its other ipods (classic/nano, etc.) you can open the files if you enabled disk usage

You need iTunes installed in order for the computer to detect your iPod as an iPod and not as an imaging device.

It's to allow easy access to the iPhone Camera's photos, so you can copy them to your computer. I'll bet that if you created ~/Media/DCIM/100APPLE/, that you would be able to pull pictures from there.
