iPhone 3GS users should save certain files in order to ensure the ability to jailbreaks on future OS releases.

Here is the iPhone Dev-Team supported tutorial taken from iClarified.

First, what OS (operating system) do you have?

Did you unhide "hidden files and folders"?

    In Vista Basic:

In Control Panel > Folder Options > View (tab) select "Show hidden files and folders" and Apply > OK

This probably requires a reboot, after you make the change.

    Do that first.

There are screenshots, above, not Vista Basic but same family.

Next, I put a copy of the ipsw and of redsn0w, both, copied to my Desktop.

It made the jailbreak less stressful.

I had to use Search *.ipsw to find that darn thing. I used the Desktop copy for the jailbreak.

Everything was in the proper places at the end.

Do the recommended backups, first. This is strongly recommended.

I also would like to point out, once you start the redsn0w jailbreak, when the redsnow gui (graphical user interface) reports it is finished, only the gui instructions are finished. Be online at the time and wait, and wait, some more for the jailbreak to finish. It's kinda fun. I wish I had snapshots.

Yes, because the restore removes the jailbreak (and unlock).
