This is a discussion thread for the "Will the iPod Touch be Discontinued?" story posted on the front page.
I remember John Gruber and Dan Benjamin talking about this on The Talk Show a few weeks back and they had a similar opinion to yours. I don't think it's going to be discontinued, but Apple might not put as much emphasis on it as they had before since smartphones seem to be the new wave of mobile technology. Their top products will be the iPad and iPhone, but the iPod is still going to exist for those who need neither.
It will stay. It's the first encounter for many to iOS and the App Store. I'm sure most people here started with an iPod touch and have now moved to the iPhone or an iPad, (or both.) It's the gateway iOS device. Both the cheapest and most accessible, it gives people a taste of the goods. (As the iPad and iPhone have been upgraded far beyond what the iPod touch is capable of.)
I think it will either be discontinued or specs will be crap. Apple showed they didn't care about it when they introduced the super duper awesome and revolutionary white iPod touch.
I could see the iPod touch being discontinued. If you watch any of the latest keynotes for iOS, only the iPad and iPhone will be mentioned. The iPod touch would just be filed under the iPhone features.
I dare anyone to jog with a 7" iPad. iPod(s) Touches WILL NOT BE DISCONTINUED! I don't think parents would buy their kid a 7" tablet over an iPod touch for the same price.
I think its gonna be discontinued but not replaced by a smaller iPad. Even if they bring it back, I doubt it will even have up to date specs.
