im just wondering so then, should my new iphone become...locked by the provider, i can then have the IMEI changed to continue using it, as that is what is changed when they are locked right?

The IMEI never changes, even when locked to a network.

, so lets say for arguments sake my iphone was bricked by 02 if it were reported lost or stolen, there would be no way of getting it to work as a phone again? could such a thing (hypothetically) still be used as a glorified iPod?

I think you can get it to work again if you take it to the place you bought it and explain that you have now found it etc

This assumes you actually lost it and you didnt for example just try your luck with a dodgy phone that was stolen before you bought it

Changing the IMEI is highly illegal.

ziPhone enabled the changing of it, but since the DevTeam are against breaking any laws, you won't see it happen. Unless someone creates an app that will do that.
