If I somehow obtain 3.0 firmware, will I still be able to upgrade for free?

Not the beta 3.0, but the actual 3.0, after I install it to my iPod, will I be able to upgrade for free when Apple comes out with newer versions?

what do you mean 'for you'?

if you purchase the update and install it legally, all future 3.x releases are free

Whoa, I have no idea what I was thinking when I said "For you".

But if I acquire it illegally, and instal the firmware, will the future updates still be free?

    lol, way to be subtle.

no Apple has no records of you buying it since you illegally got it; thus, they will not let you dl any 3.x software.

And I'd suggest you get this for reals. You will avoid a lot of hassle.
