I see all of this work being done for a jailbreak every time a new FW or model is released, and it all strikes me as ridiculous that it's even necessary. Will Apple EVER free their devices from communist rule? Will there eventually be a day when we can install whatever we want on the iPods? Personally, I think that given enough time, Apple would eventually allow this, but I also think that it would be 20+ years away, and I just don't see Apple (if they even still existed) still making iPods in 2030.

    Thoughts?

May be not 100% but they may loosen up.

What they really need to stop is the pirating.. They care so much about the iPod itself, but not the other iPhone app developers

Yes, Apple should somehow make the Apps uncrackable or close to uncrackable.

I agree, I think the main problem is pirating. I don't think they lock down the devices to prevent profit stealing from hard working devs, I think they do it because they want you to have to pay them for everything you need on the device (even if there's a jailbroken free alternative).

The developers can implement it in their apps. Beejive IM required a license to your UDID or else it would work. some figured out how to get around, but eventually security on that App got so tight that no one bothers anymore.
