hold the home button to close running apps. if they are closed, release the home button. if not, just restart the ipod

you're running low on runtime memory (iPod has 128MB to start with, and other stuff (music, safari, wifi, apps)) will use up the memory. one app called Free Memory on Appstore ($0.99) will free up over 20MB of memory used by your iPod, and will make it run really fast (made a big difference on my 3G).

when you press Home after playing an app, it completely closes. So if you're playing an online game and you press home, you are signed out. Currently, Apple doesnt allow anything to run in the background.

After JB, install Backgrounder, which will let you run apps in the background. Works best when you are using AIM, or just waiting for a YouTube video to completely load. It basically lets your iPod multitask.
