You can't get wifi in all places unless something is producing the signal.

And where would this omnipresent access point be?

    Closest thing: iPhone.

Paying for the service fees would hardly make it worth it.

    Like he said, iPhone.

It does exists, however like previously mentioned paying for data plan along with the cost of the hardware is just not worth it. Might as well get a new smartphone, but it doesn't have to be THE IPHONE.

    Pocketable Sprint Router

Or on your next phone upgrade get a handset that creates hotspots I know Sprint Moguel and some windows mobile phone has the ability, if you prefer to surf on the ipod touch instead.

You can tether a phone to your computer. I would have to know what os you run to enable the laptopo as a hotspot. But long story short, YOu could use the mobile web signal your cell gets, tether it via bluetooth to a laptop and then enable the laptop as a hotspot. This depends on a few factors. 1) your cell phone has internet access and a data plan, 2) you have a laptop with wifi.
