    Hi All:
    I have had an Ipod Touch for about a month now and
    have read many posts regarding Jailbreaking.
    Coming from the linux world, under Ubuntu 10.04
    one can modify videos to mp4 format using ffmpeg and transfer
    just about any file through GoodReader easily.
    So my question is -- does Jailbreaking provide a better user experience? Or is it a situation of ---I can Jailbreak, therefore I do?
    Just asking.

    Jail breaking "frees your iPod" from Apples limited customization options. Jail breaking allows you to download applications that will allow your iPod to have cool themes and download many Apps that allow you to have your iPod how you want it.

    Try this BigBoss article;
    http://thebigboss.org/why-jailbreak-iphone

    (although it says iPhone, it still applies to the iPod touch)

    The official Wikipedia definition of iOS jailbreaking:

    Jailbreaking is a process that allows iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users to run third-party unsigned code on their devices by unlocking the operating system and allowing the user root access. Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many extensions and themes previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia. A jailbroken iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch is still able to use the App Store and iTunes.

    Jailbreaking is distinct from SIM unlocking, which, once completed, means that the mobile phone will accept any SIM without restriction on, for example, the country or network operator of origin. Jailbreaking, according to Apple, voids Apple's warranty on the device, although this is quickly remedied by restoring the device in iTunes.

    Cydia installer founder Jay Freeman estimates that over 10% of all iPhones are jailbroken.[1]

    I would highly recommend it, although its not available for devices running 4.0 ATM, I have used it on 3.1.3 and enjoyed it alot.

    Hope this helps

    I personally only jailbreak to have themes and certain little tweaks like SBSettings and makeitmine. If you only use your iPod for music, web, and other official things then there isn't much of a reason to jailbreak.

    SBSettings. Probably my favourite thing for jailbreaking.
