Anyone care to explain? Isn't it possible to get an iPhone and not use the internet and therefore just make it an iPod Touch minus internet, plus a phone? My friend needs an MP3 player and a phone and it's just more convenient to put two in one.

they lowered it and made it so you HAVE TO activate it when you buy it. so now instead of profiting off the phone its self, theyre getting their money from the 3g data plan. so no you cant use it as a nice ipod

Yeah, but you'd still need to buy it from someone who already bought it with the plan.

There's almost no way to get an iPhone cheaper than an iPod, unless you had connections with Apple or something.

the new iPhone isn't cheaper. it's just subsidized by at&t. instead of paying the full price upfront, you pay for it over time, and by the end of the contract it actually costs more than the original.

also, if you don't qualify for the subsidized price, its $499/$599 for the 8/16GB and even more if you want to activate without a contract.

the 3G is many things, but cheaper is not one of them.
