I am just wondering why? What exactly is different in the 3rd gen.
I will understand any technical terms you throw at me, I don't care about when it will be untethered, I was just wondering what the blockade that geohot hit was.

    Thanks.

It is not untethered because the iBoot (bootrom) is different on the iPod touch 3G then the other devices, which is pretty common with Apple. It also has a different exploit. Geo Hotz was trying to make an untethered jailbreak, but shortly figured that it was a difficult task and he had the tethered jailbreak ready so he asked his followers if they wanted a jailbreak right at the moment or not and they said yes. We are pretty lucky to have at least something, but he is not working on the untethered jailbreak (he is leaving that to the Chronic Dev). Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong somewhere in this post. =P

The reason for it being tethered is that the new bootrom needs to be patched to accept and boot the Jailbroken Ramdisk. As of now, a suitable exploit & injection vector have not been found, so the patch has to be from an external source.

Ah, so he "could have" but decided to give us a quicker fix to hold us over until something better.

I understand, and glad that he decided to do so

Rumor is that Chronic Dev has the exploit, but they are holding onto it until Apple releases a new iPhone, so that they can't patch the exploit. They would have released it already if we didnt have the tethered jailbreak. I haven't let my iTouch run out of battery yet, though I did have to restart it a few times to install winterboard and such.

What do you mean rumor? Chronic Dev had the exploit in which helped Geo Hotz.
