Okay, my iPod is purring like a cat when the screen is on. When it goes out, like the backlight, it stops. What the crap is wrong with my iPod?

It may be the same thing that happened with my PSP. It would emit a high-pitched noise when the backlight was on a certain brightness setting. Have you tried changing the brightness? I don't think it's anything too serious, so unless it's annoying you, I wouldn't bother trying to get it replaced.

There's a cat living in your iPod. When the backlight is on, it wakes up. When it's off, it's sleeping. That's why it purrs when it's on.

Now to answer your question that sounds like a problem with the backlight, maybe a lose cable or something? You should take it back or send it to apple that is not a good thing.
