i have an iphone 3g(not jailbroken) and it lags a LOT!
even with spotlight turned off..
its not really made perfectly to handle older devices.
i just bought it though, not that long ago...
im really considering throwing it at the wall
The slowness in some older generation devices is known to apple. The official response from them is they're looking in to it. So until they fix it in some future update, you'll just have to wait. You can also try rebooting the phone, some user's report that it helps.
You need to restore it.
I restored cuz 4.0 was the same and I do reboot it at times but takes awhile
I've heard of something called "virtual memory" I heard that helps
Try iMemory Enhancer.

It'll increase your RAM up to 80-95MB.
------------------double post merged------------------Make sure you reboot after you install it in Cydia.
Have you tried it out?
It worked dude!
Remove the desktop overlays? Disable launchdaemons you don't need?
Uninstall it. It just makes your iPhone's SSD work more, which shortens it's life by alot.
Uninstall any Themes you have on there.
Tweak the HomeScreen Wallpaper GFX
Remove Launch Deamons
And by then it shouldn't lagg anymore. My iPod Touch 2G MB doesn't lagg @ all.
