I'm not talking about the different generations, that is understandable. but what's the difference between an MC model and a non-MC model? if it's a 3g iPod touch, shouldn't they all be the same?

the models just have different hardware
The MC model for example can't be downgraded to 3.1.2 because of compatability issues

why does that matter when you're jailbreaking it? it's on 4.0, not 3.1.2?

The mb has a bootrom exploit which means it will be jailbreakable forever. The mc model has no known bootrom exploit, so it depends on userland exploits which are in the firmware. For people like us jailbreakers BIG DIFF.

Jailbreaking is the biggest issue; for example, some 3GS iPhones are vulnerable to the 24kpwn, while the majority aren't. That is because the ones impervious to it were built later.
