If you click manage music, it won't erase.

BUT Just after you do click it, check each tab afterwards and make sure that all the individual check marks are gone (The music, podcasts, movies). You can leave the applications one on obviously.. and you might have to re-add some podcasts, but otherwise, everything else should stay put.

This means you synced your music and/or videos with a different computer, or you recently reformatted your computer.
Then that is your problem and you have to erase and sync, itunes does that, i dont know why, its really pointless but you just have to live with it. One way i get around it though is by installing the latest mediamonkey. It's compatible with the latest 3.1.2 firmware on all ipods and iphones, and allows you to sync no matter what computer was used originally.

by the way ive only tested mediamonkey with music only, no video. And ringtones can be still put on using itunes.
