Maybe I'm just dense, but when it set a photo for my wallpaper, and then go back to my main screen, it's not there.... It's just a black backgroun with all my apps on it. Where can I see my wallpaper? I feel so stupid!!!

You need to have Winterboard installed, with a theme on called something like HomeScreen Wallpaper or something like that...

    Is your iPod jailbroken?

On official iPod firmwares (which is what you're running) there's no way to change the black background on the homescreen, only the lockscreen.

You need to jailbreak your iPod if you want a homescreen (also known as springboard) wallpaper. I'm guessing it's a second generation?

Yes it is. I found info on Winterboard and jailbreaking.... But at 11:00 pm this old lady's attention span is zero. LOL. Maybe I'll try tomorrow. Is it very complicated to do? I'm certainly not an expert like you and it might be too much for me to figure out!

No, it's not complicated at all. It can sound intimidating, but the GUI programs that have been released make it as easy as clicking a button (literally). After reading a guide or two, you'll have it jailbroken in no time.
