    Emoji is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoji

Do you live in Japan? If not, you'll need to hack emoji on there.

thats cause the emoji is not supposed to be used anywhere else than the softbank mail
but once you hack it, its displayed everywhere
Still, strange for Apple to not perfect it...hmmm

Emoji is a unicode (utf8) characters in private use unicode area, it can be supported by anything else if you code it to, even without hacking Softbank iPhone.
