Like when you do a firmware update my dad keep telling me don't do it blah blah blah cuz the phone will connect by itself to the internet and take it.
Is it true? I pretty sure it ain't but i need to be 1000% sure.

If you have the .ipsw file to a 2.0,2.1,2.2 or 2.2.1 .ipsw file, you can hold shift and click restore in iTunes and restore to the ipsw file and you won't have to pay $10.

The ipsw files will be named something like "iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw" (which would be version 2.2.1).

Just download it elsewhere and do it like that if you're not sure.

    Yeah... no.

You will not be charged for the upgrade. If you are really paranoid, just remove the SIM card while you're doing it.
