hi i have got a ipod touch 3g 32gb and im wondering when is it gonna start to be left behind and things are not going to support it anymore because the new ipod touch (4g) has retina display so is the 3g gonna get left behind much sooner than the 1st gen did when the 3rd gen came out

im going for iOS 6 or 7. But it all depends on what they add to the firmware and if the device can handle it.

Here is a little math and history.

The first iPod touch and iPhone both got left behind at firmware at 3.1.3 and their starting firmware is 1.1.

That is approximately 2 MAJOR firmware upgrades from where it stopped.

So, since 3Gs start at 3.1.1, they will drop support at approximatly 5.3.X (Just a guess there)

Or possibly 6 or 7 like RedRum said. 2G and 3G are considered "modern" if that.

I'm thinking 2 major updates before 3G gets outdated, meaning cannot handle the firmware.

    But I'm upgrading my 3G 32GB to 4G 32GB next week!

Agreed. Even the 2G iPod touch is already left behind with a watered down iOS 4 because the full firmware features are too heavy for the iPod to handle. The 1G iPod touch, as we all know, was left behind at iOS 4. So if we did some tracing, iOS 5 might leave the 2G iPod obsolete and leave the 3G iPod touch with a watered down version of that firmware. iOS 6 (which is 2 major firmware updates after iOS 4) might leave the 3G iPod touch unsupported. But this is all just speculation.

It'll start getting left behind with iOS 5.

No, the 2g CAN handle it, apple is giving the newest stuff to the 3G MC models (basicly a 2g) because Apple is just giving us a bunch of bullsh!t...

You really don't have to worry about this until the 2G is "left behind". But no device will ever be "left behind" because of jailbreaking.
