At a guess pressing too hard, at awkward angles and getting it wet. A Silicone case will do it more good then harm as it will dampen the pressure you use to press the button and keep moisture out.

I was so protective of my touch. I put the invisible shield on it and kept in a Golla case all the time. My sleep wake button broke after only 6 weeks. Apple is sending me a new one at the moment but it dosent really make me feel good about the quality of the unit when it breaks after 6 weeks with such care given to it.

As it is a physical button, it can be affected by a whole number of things, from being pressed down too hard repeatedly to a connection breaking or shorting out.
