What is the actual capacity of a ipod touch 2g 16 gig?

What I mean by this is, how much memory do you have after you install the softwear. Is it 15gig?

It's about 14.8GB available to you.

When an iPod's capacity is advertised, it's advertised in magnitudes of thousands of bits, instead of 1024. So (before anything is put on it) a 16 GB iPod touch as advertised would be read by iTunes as being 14.9 GB. Or an 8 gigger would be read as 7.45.

This kind of thing is also present for computer hard drives.

Nope. An 8 gigger will get you 7.01gigs exactly. And the firmware is around 148mb(the orange bar on iTunes), so it really isn't that much after formatting pays its toll.

My friends was about 14.9 It's pretty good, and its not that big of a deal that it doesn't have 16. Sure, thats a lot of songs or something, but about 15gb isn't really that much of a difference to 16gb.

Yes I am aware of that, there are a a few other things that factor in, but the translation of how many bytes are regarded as a gigabyte is the main contributor.

The orange bar isnt your firmware. if you will notice, when you iPod/iPhone is marked under "Devices", at the top it will tell you the capacity of your device.
For me personally, I have a 32GB iPod Touch 2G and it says "Capacity: 29.56 GB", meaning all the system files and firmware are already counted out and they do not count in your total uploaded content.
