like this is the first time i see this what is it?
It... is an operating system.
It is just like an operating system on a computer, except in a device that fits in your hand.
ok so wats the diff from the normal firmwares and this?
Right now its crap. Its for the nerds. Wait for like 6 months for the real release. look here: http://iphonelinux.org look at the roadmap
This is not a port of an entire distribution. "Linux" itself refers to only the Linux kernel, which has been ported to the iPhone architecture. Nobody has ported all the packages for it yet (and they may not at all)
Well they trying to run Debian for ARM on it... because they have ready to go binaries for ARM architecture :> so theres no need for porting the basic software (you know... console stuff, not very useful stuff for non-geek humans) Please Register or Log in to view images
Linux is only a canvans to make something new for iPhone/iPoT other then iPhone OS :> to make own GUI or use ready ones, like Ubuntu Mobile or Android (yes, one from Google Please Register or Log in to view images). It's mostly for geeks but thee should be some easy solutions for other ppl ^^

Yes. Just don't expect X11 or anything like that coming (at least in the near future)
I don't know if Android or Mobile Ubuntu needs X11 server :> they may not need Please Register or Log in to view images
Yes they use a minimal X11. But porting all that over to the iPhone would be a pretty big task as Xorg is pretty extensive. Not to mention that there likely aren't any Linux drivers for iPhone hardware.
Don't worry :> all we need is drivers Please Register or Log in to view images
