yeah, firmware is 1.1.1 2 3 and 4. and it goes to 2.0 [which isn't actually released to the public yet] because of the app store and the SDK, etc.

Basically think of firmware as software for the hardware [OS X for iPhone] as opposed to software for software [Mail for OS X].

It jumps to 2.0 (1.2.0) cause there's just so much difference between 1.1.4 and 2.0 (frameworks, appstore, etc.) that it wouldn't release as 1.1.5 (which normally would be a couple of fixes, maybe a small feature or two)

That's alright, you have to start somewhere! Glad you asked the question, because know you'll know!
Yes, firmware is the software version that the iPod touch runs on. Firmware 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 are similar in ways, so the reason why there is a jump to 1.2.0 is because it's much different!

For example, one difference between 1.1.1 firmware and 1.1.2 was that they fixed the TIFF exploit! Usually between firmware updates, all Apple says is "bug fixes" although this is a big update, so 1.2.0 would be an appropriate title for this new firmware.

I've made a dictionary on my iPod touch Reference, check it out so learn some iPod touch vocabulary:

Keep in mind that 2.0 is really 1.2.0, so it is just a continuation of the numbering scheme. Firmware is usually designated so that the more decimals before the changing number, the smaller the change. (i.e. 1.0.0.0.2 wouldn't be much different then 1.0.0.0.1 whereas 1.2.0.0.0 would be much different then 1.1.0.0.0).

So 1.2.0 is a noticeable change from the 1.1.0 but it isn't anything earth-shattering, whereas 2.0.0 will probably be a large overhaul (if we ever get there).
