    For Mac though, iMovie is great for novices.

    I've never come across any good software that's free. iMovie is probably the best, but that's not 100% free.

    If you want quality, you need to pay the price.

    Not really necessarily true. Cinelerra is AWESOME. I really suggest that the OP installs Linux (Pref. Ubuntu) to play around with Cinelerra. http://cinelerra.org/

    Its on par with with many of the pro apps out there. And its Free.

    I tried it and absolutely hated it. I always thought of it as more a compositor than editor though.
    <offtopic>Best compositor ever = Combustion *sigh* I miss it. haha.

    Anyway, back on topic, I've been looking into using Houdini Apprentice as a video editor/compositor, but it's incredibly hard
