Somehow an iPod touch at BestBuy was stuck on an iPhone error or something. When I was looking at it a customer service rep said "It thinks it's an iPhone."

It gives you an error if you try to restore with iphone firmware. I was going crazy trying to restore then I realized it was iPhone firmware. Hehe..

if there was a way to actually get it on a touch then it would probably brick it or something

The original soft upgrade to 1.1.3 upgraded using the iPhone firmware... No difference really, just an annoying "Activate Now" popup everytime you started up, and the Phone and SMS apps that didn't work..
