    Hello,

i would like to know what jail breaking software does to the ipod/iphone when it jailbreaks it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what i understand:

I have a psp with custom firmware.. i know (to my knowledge) that the firmware is modified before installation and can be completely different than the official firmware. The stuff that would be modified would be un-sign-code-restrictions.

    ----

Now.. with ipods and iphones, when jail breaking software like Blackrain and RedSnow and SpirtJB, the firmware is on the ipod/iphone already and is some how edited or files are just copied over.

^^^ that last paragraph... Please do correct me and explain.. i would very much like to know.

    Thanks,

Jailbreaking gives you root access to the device / filesystem.

You have control over everything when you jailbreak.

The Dev Team and them find an exploit in the hardware and firmware.
They simply find ways to allow root access.

Dev Team uses absolutely NO Apple software for ANY of their jailbreaks. They simply use exploits to get into the system, then drop their code on the device so it 'unlocks' it.

It would be a huge legal liability for them to use Apple's firmware and distribute it like PSP hacks do.

Just curious, what device do you have? You don't have it set yet. If you have a second generation device, Apple has disabled multitasking and springboard wallpapers for you, but jailbreaking can re-enable them.
