No, it does not back up media (music, videos, photos etc)

It backups preferences and settings, so that the iPod touch is the way you like it. For example, having that clicking sound you hear when using the iPod touch set to headphones only/turned off.

Lol, no, its that my friend has a iPhone and gets an error "" iTunes cannot read the content of the iphone" and asks restore settings, and he wanted to know when it backuped what it backuped exactly and i wasn't sure and i didn't want to screw him over. But it wont even let him backup, so i am wondering is there a fix?

im trying to update the software on my ipod touch which hasnt been updated since before christmas. problem is im using a different computer which has its own ipod library and settings saved/synced on it, i havent synced my ipod but i want to update it. when i choose the update button it asks me if i want to back up my files etc, if i do this will affect the previous ipods data or erase their backups in place of my own? :S
    please help asap.

no, it won't affect the previous backup...you will have two backups one for each ipod. when you are restoring your ipod itunes gives you option to chose a backup from the ones stored in your pc. good luck
