What does Apple do with the older version of the Macbooks?

What I mean, is the newly updated Macbooks are new. What do they do with the old version? Do they phase them out slowly, till they start making the new ones? Are they still selling the older versions? If not, they can't just take them off the shelves...can they?

They probably go under the 'clearance' section on the Apple Website.

They could also use them for replacements...
    But I'm not exactly sure.

They probably just stop manufacturing them but still keep selling them. Once their inventory reaches a low-enough mark, they introduce the new versions of whatever (iMac, MacBook, etc.) and completely remove their old stock from the shelves.

The last of their stock probably is sold at at clearance prices on their website or something.
