You must know how to program before attempting to make iPhone applications. Once you know C and Objective-C, the guides/tutorials on this site and others will make sense to you. Be patient, take your mind off iPhone development until you are ready. Jumping in without programming knowledge will not be the least bit gratifying, and you will not be successful if you go that route.

    I recommend the following books:

    http://www.amazon.com/Programming-Objective-C-2-0-Stephen-Kochan/dp/0321566157
    http://www.amazon.com/Programming-Language-2nd-Brian-Kernighan/dp/0131103628

That's terribly misleading. While it does cost $99 per year to publish applications in iTunes, it costs nothing (save for educational books) to learn and make applications. Apps can be distributed for free, and quite successfully at that.

I totally agree with Axis (as this IS the way to do it). I tried straight off iphone programming and it was a nightmare untill i got that first book Axis is recommending and read through it and it all makes sense now
