If you put a custom ROM on it, that should solve your UI problems. Motoblur has been known to cause unwanted thoughts of turning your phone into a projectile en route towards the nearest wall.
My only Android phone thus far has been the Motorola Atrix. At first, it came with 2.2 and Motoblur, and it was merely ok. Motoblur sucked, but at least the phone had enough power to run it. If anyone were to say Android sucked and their only experience was with the old version of Blur, I couldnt blame them. Then came the 2.3 update, and a whole new version of Motoblur. The phone became pretty good. The difference between the two versions of Blur was night and day. Then came CM7, and the phone became absolutely amazing. Dont write off Android until you've seen it as Google intended it, those carrier skins really do tarnish Android's image. Hardware wise, its solidly built. Camera could be a bit better, and pentile displays arent that great. But the raw horsepower (tegra 2 and 1gb ram) more than make up for that.
HTC Evo 4G Right now I got a HTC Evo 4G... I love it, but I'm considering the 3D. I just rooted my 4G, so I'm happy with it ATM.
OG DROID It's fast but not fast as the current flagship android phones. My phone however is better and faster than the iphone3GS on iOS 3
Samsung Galaxy S II - Stock ROM (CyanogenMod isn't a benefit at the moment, and MIUI is still in development) - Stock kernel - GO Launcher EX w. Suave HD icons. Amazing experience.
