    I think it's something like:

    ~/System/Library/SpringBoard.app/

But I couldn't edit any of the PNGs I downloaded...

thats because apple switches the colour channels of the pngs it uses so you "cant" edit them. if you are on windows then there is a program called fixpng which switches the channesls back so you can edit the pngs. the good thing is that your ipod can also read regular pngs so that when you have edited your png you can just ssh it strraight back in to your ipod. you do not need to convert it back first

What the f*** are you talking about?

*Wrong directory, totally. /User/System? I don't know that folder. And if ~/ is supposed to mean <root>, then lol. It's still wrong, and ~ means /var/mobile.

*Why would you need to go to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/ to edit icons?

*You can edit any PNG in /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/, no exceptions.

wrong, any of the pngs apple put on the device like the default lock icon for instance need to be "fixed" before any image editing software can open them
