We tend to judge the iPod on whats new with it, not what it is in general.

Can you imagine what a truly "magical" and "revolutionary" device the current ipod touch would be hailed as, had it been the first version of it in 2008?

People keep complaining about it not having a better camera, more memory, but the fact is, if you just judge it on what it is now, and not how many things were improved on in the past 12 months, maybe then you can appreciate it for what it is.

And besides, if you did just want to judge it based on its progression, compare it to the Zune, or the Creative Zen. Those products havent progressed half as much as the iPod touch. And Microsoft definitely had the money to accomplish it. But not the passion or the talent.

IMO, the Zune HD is the best alternative to the iPod touch

Absolutely. It's the next best device out there.

Unfortunately, it's far from an iPod killer.

It had some cool things going for it. OLED screen, HD Radio, stylish interface. But Microsoft dropped the ball. They dug their own grave by making it a US only device, which prevented their app store from attracting enough developers to make for a robust marketplace.

Hardware wise, it really needed some basics like a built in speaker, volume rocker, and bluetooth.

Its also missing core apps like youtube, pandora, and the web browser is sluggish, and doesnt display a lot of web pages correctly.

Its also lacking near console quality games (nova, firemint real racing, ff chaos rings)

MS just really needed to bring the zune HD to a global level. They needed a larger team with more design savvy, and they should have updated it more.

I agree with you though, the iPod Touch is an amazing device.

Yes, if they did bring it to a global field, make it up (or try) to par with the iPod touch 4G, then Apple finally have something to worry about.

You do realize the first iPod touch was released in 2007, right? I know, I had one.

Although, of course we judge it by it's features and abilities, not what it already does great. Which is why I turn a blind eye to the inevitable hate after almost any apple event. Take the iPad for example. Has it been a failure, like many predicted at it's launch?

    Exactly.

It's more that we want what we know is possible to have and have not been included.

But of course, some people took it to another level...
