Owning an iPad is fast becoming one of life’s great necessities. Not only is it an amazing study tool, and a micro computer in itself, but web-apps like TV Catchup (@tvcatchup) help expand its appeal to different audiences. TV Catchup is a UK-only service which allows you to stream Freeview channels to a hoard of different devices.

The variety of channels ranges from the basic terrestrial (BBC One, Two, ITV, etc) all the way up to Dave, Yesterday and QVC (if you want it..) On a desktop, you’re able to choose a quality of streaming – So you can see, I’ve got Low Quality selected because my home internet connection has a download speed of about 0.5mbps (on a good day!) but if you’re lucky enough to be on Virgin’s optical fibre service, you can get high quality TV on your desktop.

There are also iDevice specific sites. For starters, the iPhone (and iPod Touch) has its own TV portal at http://iphone.tvcatchup.com – It’s the same idea, all the channels are available, except it’s easier to navigate around the site because it’s been iPhone-ised. It’s a great service to have on a device so small, because you can use it anywhere and it’s also pretty decent on a 3G connection.

During the World Cup, I sat in McDonalds and watched the a group stage game on my iPhone. I even had an old man looking over my shoulder asking me where I got my TV from… he also sat to watch the game later though.

But the best medium of all is the iPad. Because the screen size is so large and it’s so light – you can have a portable television (and it would be even better if you had a landscape dock.) You can visit the site on your iPad at http://ipad.tvcatchup.com.

Not running an iDevice? No problem. There's also a generic mobile site available at http://m.tvcatchup.com which you can use on the Android, Blackberry and Symbian platforms. Again, the principle is the same, you just log in and choose a channel, and the streaming starts automatically.

All you need to do is sign up for a free account (takes about 5 minutes) and you’re ready. Then you can pick a channel to watch and stream it for as long as you want! Like I said, it’s a UK only service and you need a great internet connection to reap the benefits to the max, but it’s a great site to keep bookmarked.
