Most people say Whistle and TextNow are the best, check those out first if you have not already.

I only have used textPlus, Textfree Unimited, iCall, and Fring. The rest are just apps on the App Store.

    Update:
    gv mobile +
    gv connect
    Heywire (works in Australia)

Thats on the list, if you know any that are not please let me know. This is just a thread so people wont need to ask "How can I send text from my iPod Touch?" or "How can I turn my iPod into an iPhone to call people?"

Well skype is there. And it's free for skype to skype. All those voip ones you need to pay a monthly or yearly fee just to call. A lot of people have skype. And now it's on phones too. Best thing to have imo.

Do any of those calling ones NOT require you to use your own number, but are still free for all calling? I think iSIP is 5.99 USD but im not sure if charges for calling.

I would try Whistle, iSip and Vphone. I just have a gut feeling. Read the description in the App Store to find out of any that you are interested in.
